On Sunday, Mar. 8, at 12:00 p.m., the varsity baseball team played against Santa Margarita High School in a pre-season scrimmage. It was apparent from the start of the game that it would not be an easy victory, as Santa Margarita’s lineup consisted of various players already committed to universities nationwide, including Oregon State University and UCLA.
Santa Margarita, the away team, batted first against Dana’s starting pitcher Ian May. The first batter was walked, but this danger was quickly dealt with as Dana proceeded to turn a double play up the middle. May then struck out Santa Margarita’s third batter, holding the opposing team at 0 runs.
Dana came out swinging, with Aedan Anderson hitting a leadoff double to right center field, but was picked off at 2nd base. The next batter was walked, and the third batter, Rocco Defrancisco hit a grounder which allowed another out at 2nd but not at 1st before. The first inning came to a close with the out of the fourth batter.
Later in the game, Dana scored its first two runs as a result of a single from Colin Macy which brought in runners Sam Lund and Kanoa Perman. In the subsequent inning, AJ Newcomb pitched, and Santa Margarita tied the game at 2-2. The next couple innings were largely uneventful until Santa Margarita scrapped a few doubles off Dana pitcher CJ Zwahlen, putting them up 4-2.
