Capturing moments through video is something most everyone does nowadays, but turning those moments into creative films however is something very few people are able to do. Holland Hoopes is a junior at Dana Hills High School who creates awesome short films which she posts on her social media. These films are often short clips of Holland and her friends enjoying life which are edited together and accompanied by a piece of music. Each video has a different vibe yet overall Holland creates a unique and distinctive look in every one of her films. The best way one could explain it could be trippy and vintage.
Holland explains her process, “When making a video I always start by figuring out where I want to film and who I want to film with because it is usually all about the people I’m with and the place that I am in, not necessarily getting cool shots.” This is evident when watching one of Holland’s films as they highlight these aspects above all. She continues, “Then I tend to listen to music while I film, that’s how I get more inspiration and a lot of times I figure out the song I want to use in the film by listening to music … That’s how I set it all up.” Again, this process can be seen in each video as the music used always fits well and syncs up smoothly to the clips. There is a general look in the film which makes them feel lighthearted and enjoyable to watch.
“A lot of Pink Floyd, a lot of Grateful Dead… it’s mainly just music because I’m really just making videos just so that I can listen to music and edit very cool things alongside that.”
When asked about where she draws inspiration from, Holland says that music is the main player. “A lot of Pink Floyd, a lot of Grateful Dead… it’s mainly just music because I’m really just making videos just so that I can listen to music and edit very cool things alongside that.” Holland also goes on to say that Wes Anderson is another huge inspiration. “Wes Anderson is my idol … I love him, I love all of his work, and I study it … so those are my biggest inspirations, Wes Anderson and music.”
Behind these laid back films is an ambition. Holland says that she aspires to be a filmmaker and explains how through each film she gains more and more experience. “My personal gain from the videos I make has to be the practice it gives me. I have a goal that I made in the beginning of the year… that each video would be better than the last.” One can tell that Holland has been getting better through each video she makes, however even from the first one it is obvious that she had a talent for the craft.
She finishes by explaining, “I am just getting experience honestly because that is what I want to do with my life, so I’ll start where I can and go with it.” All in all Holland is a talented and creative person who is motivated to do what she loves and is only going to keep growing. Her videos are unique and fun to watch with each something different to offer.
