DHHS Football: CIF

Dana Hills lost Thursday night on Nov.4 against El Modena in the CIF Game 23-20 (OT). Despite the loss the Dolphins had one of the best seasons in school history finishing 8-3 while going 2-1 in league under Coach Heney. “ I feel like we played to our plan… I felt we played a really good football team, we went to overtime and things didn’t turn our way, I think we gave it all we had” said Dana Hills starting QB Bo Kelly.

After an early El Modena field goal, senior wide receiver Omarjay Black ran 56 yards off a screen pass for a touchdown. After an Vanguard touchdown possession in the 2nd quarter, senior quarterback Bo Kelly was able to complete a 68 yard pass to senior Owen Chambers to the 20 yard line of El Modena to set up another Black touchdown  putting the score at 14-10 at halftime. After good starting field position starting at the Dana 26 yard-line in the 3rd quarter, the Vanguards capitalized by punching it in the endzone for a touchdown off a 2 yard running play. The Dolphins again responded with another long Kelly pass to Chambers inside the El Modena 15 yard-line setting up a #1 Kion Afrookhteh 34 yard field goal in the early 4th quarter. With 1:14 left in the 4th quarter Dana Hills got the ball one more time in regulation and drove down to the El Modena 39 yard-line where Kelly´s pass was intercepted with 6 seconds remaining resulting in the game going into overtime. In overtime, Dana´s offense got inside the El Modena 6 yard line, and on 4th and 4 elected to kick a field goal which was good from 23 yards out by Afrookhteh. The very next possession the Vanguards  scored a touchdown off a 6 yard rushing touchdown resulting in a 23-20 El Modena victory vs Dana Hills.

El Modena controlled the clock in the game running 70 offensive plays while Dana Hills only ran 38 offensive plays. However, the Dana Hills defense held strong only allowing 17 points going into the overtime period. When asked about the Vanguards halftime adjustments Kelly said, “ They started to drop back more, They tried to take away the pass game but we battled pretty hard through that stuff and our defense played very well”.

Despite the loss the Dolphins had one of the best seasons in school history finishing 8-3 while going 2-1 in league under Coach Heney.
