Boys basketball has high aspirations for the coming season. This year, the team boasts a significant amount of experience, with the starting five consisting of all seniors. Not to mention, four of the five started last year.
So far, the team has met these expectations with a 9-1 record in the preseason. The boys have earned this record at two tournaments and one preseason game.
Most recently, the Dolphins dominated at the Godinez Grizzly Invitational. The demanding tournament consisted of games on consecutive days in the first week of December.
The Dolphins played against Northwood in the final game of the tournament. In the first half, the score was close, but Dana pulled away in the second half, shutting down Northwood with their lock-down defense. Dana won the game with a final score of 51-41. After the game, captain Chris Na commented, “Everyone played really well. It was one of our better games were we were playing together. We seemed really in sync.”
Earlier in the tournament, Dana defeated Woodrow Wilson. Senior Harry Wiese popped off with an emphatic 30 points, scoring more than three-fourths of Dana’s points. Dana won the game 43-32.
Dana also commanded the court in their game against Loara, defeating them 62-22. Physically and skill-wise, Dana outmatched Loara.
Earlier, after losing the first game of the tournament, the boys played against Savanna. Savanna struggled to handle the defensive pressure of Dana and shot a low field-goal percentage. Dana won handily, 71-40.
In the first game of the Godinez Grizzly Invitational, Dana was matched against Foothill. Despite coming into the game with a lot of confidence, Dana struggled offensively and failed to hit the majority of their shots. They lost 34-41 and were relegated into the losers’ bracket.
In their only non-tournament game of the preseason, Dana hosted Laguna Beach on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Dana started the first half with a punch, leading by double-digits. However, Laguna Beach fought back in the third quarter, closing the gap to a single-digit deficit. The Dolphins held onto their lead due to a strong performance by senior forward Miles Ettinger. Dana pulled through and won 46-43.
In the first tournament of the preseason, the boys traveled to Santa Ana to compete in the Four Cities Classic. The Dolphins went 4-0, winning the tournament in the championship game against Tustin 34-33.
